Smackdown this week hailed from London Ontario Canada. The show starts off with Vickie Guerrero, Edge, and Teddy Long on stage. Vickie tells the audience that tonight their will be a series of matches contested to determine who will face Undertaker at Judgement day in a World Heavyweight Championship match. First there will be qualifying matches to see who will be in the over the top rope battle royal later that night. Then whoever wins the battle royal will be the one to face Undertaker at the PPV.
In the first contest of the night it is Matt Hardy vs. CM Punk. Matt Hardy won the match thru a series of counters and counters to the counters. He eventually trapped Punk in a counter to Punk’s pin. The next match in to qualify for the battle royal is MVP vs. Finley accompanied by Hornswoggle. This was a match to see. It was filled with equal ability by both competitors and humor from Hornswoggle’s distractions. When it all comes down to the it the match was ruled as a draw. Both men pinned each other. When Finley hit the back suplex with a bridge he did not realize that he also had his shoulders on the canvas.
Next on the card is Kelly Kelly vs. Natalya accompanied by Victoria. Natalya clearly dominates this match. I will give Kelly Kelly credit for sticking it out and trying her hardest. But on that night her hardest was not good enough. Natalya locks in her families signature finisher, the sharpshooter, and forces Kelly Kelly to tap out.
Batista vs. John Morrison is next out of the gate. Of course John Morrison is followed by his fellow WWE Tag Team Champion, the Miz. This match is back and forth for the beginning, till Morrison throws Batista shoulder first into the steel steps. Morrison continues to dominate Batista, all the while keeping him on the mat. Batista eventually rises hits a few power moves and then is shut down again by Morrison. Morrison goes to the top rope to try one of his high flying maneuvers. It back fires on him. Batista spears Morrison mid-air. Next Batista hits the Batista Bomb to get the one, two, three.
It is Big Show vs. Tommy Dreamer in the next qualifying match up. This is what in the wrestling business would be called a "squash match". That means there is not chance for one of the opponents to win. It would be like a match between Hornswoggle and the Great Khali, which has happened. Yes, Big Show did win the match. There for qualifying for the battle royal.
Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero to qualify for the battle royal. Kane starts off dominating the match. Chavo then begins to break Kane down by taking away his vertical base. Chavo then begins to work on Kane’s leg. Getting a little help from his bodyguard, Bam Neely, Chavo is able to keep the big man off his feet for most of the match. Kane begins to come back, Chavo continues on the leg bringing Kane back down. Chavo is going to go for the five star frog splash off the top rope. He is caught by Kane who then delivers a devastating chokeslam to Chavo, which gets him the win.
Vladamir Kozlov vs. Phil Atlas. Kozlov won this match, dominating the entire thing.
Now for the mainevent, that everyone had been waiting for, the over the top rope battle royal. The match begins with chaos throughout the ring, of course this is perfectly alright because it is a battle royal. Hardy is the first man eliminated, then Finley, MVP, and then Big Show. Everyone one in the arena is thrilled that they will get to see the Undertaker vs. Batista rivalry continue on. Then the buzz kill arrives. Vickie proclaims that Edge has been cleared to wrestle so the match is still on. Out of no where Edge comes in the ring and spears Batista off the ring apron, to win the match. As Edge is celebrating his ruthless victory, a lighting bolt shoots down from the ceiling lighting the World Heavyweight Championsip displayed in a glass box on fire. Then Undertakers music starts and Edge takes off towards the back. That was the end of the show. Tune into Smackdown next week to see if Taker’s mind games will take a toll on the Rated R Superstar Edge.
